Trivia: Melanie was first called by her nickname in first grade, when she refused to talk to her teacher on the first day of school.

Mouse has a boisterous, outgoing personality around people she knows, but withdraws almost completely into herself when in the company of strangers. Since she and Brian Osley grew up together in the same run-down Valley City neighborhood, she feels that she and Brian are the only ones who really understand each other at school—a feeling exacerbated by the way Chet turned his back on them after Middle School.

Mouse is keenly aware that Brian is a frequent runaway, as it is usually her house he runs to. As an unintended side-effect, Mouse has grown accustomed to knowing where Brian is at all times, and grows irate when he genuinely disappears (she sees it as a personal affront). Mouse is very distrustful of Nikki Lastovitch, and believes that the latter is only friendly to Brian out of pity.

Despite her troubles, Mouse genuinely cares for Brian. As one of the few kids on their block whose parents are still married, she had always felt guilty about having what constitutes a complete family, while Brian and Chet had to make do with one parent each. She sometimes feels as though she wants to “save” Brian, but isn’t certain herself what that means. Indeed, even subconsciously, Mouse has a hard time admitting to herself that she’s fallen in love with him.
